Hey, that's me!

My dad and his two brothers were All American swimmers at Michigan State University in the 1940’s. Their father became an active volunteer for the team during those years. Fast forward to the 1960’s, my dad agrees to volunteer- coach the newly formed age-group swim team in the community where we lived. Then, in 1972, in appreciation for all the time, effort, and expertise dad had given to the now successful swim team, the swim-boosters club sent my parents to the Olympics in Munich, Germany with tickets to many swimming and diving events. One day while in Munich, they had no events to attend so they took a side trip to Switzerland. I don’t remember what city, but they were strolling through the town just window shopping. As they passed by a fancy jewelry store something in the display case caught dad’s eye. He did a double take, backed up, and pointed at a picture that was positioned among several wrist watches and stop watches and said, “Hey, that’s my dad and ME!” The picture showed his dad leaning over the end of the Michigan State pool with a Swiss stopwatch in his hand, timing his eldest son finishing a race. Mom and Dad went into the store and talked to the owner who said their company had sold the stop watches to MSU. He told my dad he would send him a copy of the picture which he did. What are the chances you’d see a picture of yourself in the window of a store in a city you randomly decided to go to in a country you’ve never been to before?
